Dailan Pugh OAM is inspired by deserts where the bones of the earth are laid bare. He is particularly intrigued by Purnululu National Park, on the edge of the Kimberley, where sediments deposited by ancient rivers solidified into sandstone 360 million years ago. They are now eroding again to form ranges of banded beehives decorated with honeycombed rocks, while ancient river pebbles freed from their entombment carve flow-forms into the streambed. He has sought to represent the essence of this awesome landscape, while focusing in on some of the inhabitants: yellow Kapok flowers, Spinifex Pigeons and the endemic Lindernia eremophiloides.
