Juliet Grace
Sunny Days in Surfers

Acrylic

Sunny Days in Surfers captures a quiet sunrise over Surfers Paradise, as the first light of day breaks across the horizon and the coastline begins to wake. Set in the 1980s, the scene reflects a time when familiar landmarks defined the skyline, including the Iluka Hotel, the twin towers of Ballah and Allunga at Paradise Centre, and the distant Focus building. At its heart sits Grundy’s waterslide, an iconic symbol of childhood excitement and local mythology.

The Holden Sandman appears as a recurring motif, representing freedom, youth, and the ritual of heading to the beach. Drawing on archival references, the work recreates an era that now exists largely in photographs and memory. Through warm light, colour, and atmosphere, it reflects the anticipation of a new day on the Gold Coast, where even the simplest moments felt full of possibility.
