And see the rivers how they run
Oil on canvas
This painting depicts the view towards Grongar Hill from Dryslwyn Castle in the Twyi Valley, West Wales – my homeland. The title is taken from the poem "Grongar Hill" by John Dyer written in 1726. The painting aims to capture the ever-shifting light and movement of the river valley
Size: 107 × 81 cm

About Matt James
I am a Brisbane–based artist primarily interested in landscape painting and drawing. Having grown up in rural West Wales my love of the outdoors is a key driver of my work.
My paintings are based on pencil and oil sketches created in situ, from photographs, and my recollection of the location. My work represents actual places but is often constructed from memory and my impression of the environment. I am interested in exploring the shape of the landscape, the movement of clouds, the perception of distance, and the shifting of the light.
Experimentation with mark-making is important to my work.
