Lisa Kennedy
‘Still, On The Water’

Mixed Media

The White-necked Heron is a consistent presence on our rural farming property near Lue, NSW. A ruthless hunter, he moves with quiet precision, stalking prey with patience and predatory intent. In wetter seasons he feeds along the edges of dams and creeks, but in periods of extended drought he is forced to adapt, hunting grasshoppers across bone-dry paddocks. In this work, I depict not the current dryness of the land, but a re-imagined, water-filled landscape that we both long to return to. The surface becomes less a literal description, and instead a memory of water that appears almost mirage-like, offering a quiet and calming stillness. The work considers memory, presence and absence, resilience and adaptation, shaped by close observation of the rhythms of life on the land.

About Lisa Kennedy

Lisa Kennedy is a regional NSW artist whose practice is grounded in close observation of the rural landscape surrounding her. Informed by daily experience of weather, land and seasonal change, she creates atmospheric works that capture fleeting impressions of the natural world, balancing recognisable form with intuitive mark making. Her work centres on drawing and mixed media, using her non-dominant hand to loosen control and preserve immediacy and movement within the image. Layering ink, watercolour and pen over textured surfaces, her practice explores the tension between stillness and motion, and our emotional connection to place.
