Still Life

Rebecca Williamson
A Quiet Tension

Pastel

This still life reflects the paths that shape us—both the ones we follow and those we leave behind, held in quiet tension.

The antique microscope recalls a life once imagined in medicine, while the worn leather satchel marks early independence and ambition. The apples anchor the work in Tasmania, where it began.

At first, the composition feels ordered, almost classical—but the presence of the waterhen unsettles that balance. Captured through the artist’s own lens, it stands alert and self-contained, neither belonging nor entirely at ease.

Its presence shifts the work from observation to uncertainty: a subtle tension between life and study, instinct and analysis.
The scissors suggest choice—the act of cutting one path away to make space for another, where each decision carries both gain and loss.

Together, these objects form a portrait of a life redirected, shaped as much by what is left behind as what is chosen.

About Rebecca Williamson

Bek Williamson is an Australian artist whose work is deeply inspired by animals, nature, and the quiet moments within them. After a 30-year career running her own business in corporate training design and facilitation, she followed her passion and now trains horses full time, embracing a life outdoors and connected to nature. Drawing for the past three years, she began as a self-taught artist and continues to refine her skills through an art community offering lessons and retreats. Working in pastel, Bek creates from her own photography, shaping each piece from concept through to completion.
