Banksia Blues
Soft Pastel
Banksia Blues is an exploration of both strength and delicacy in the Australian landscape. I was drawn to the banksia’s distinctive form—the textured cone and sculptural leaves—which feel resilient and quietly striking. It has a natural presence that is both grounded and expressive.
Working in soft pastels, I layered and blended the background to create a soft, atmospheric space that allows the banksia to come forward. At the same time, I built up the intricate textures of the flower, capturing its tactile, almost bristled surface. The process of blending and layering helped me balance softness with detail, reflecting the banksia’s character—subtle in colour, yet strong in form.

About Jeanne Cotter
Working primarily in soft pastels, I am drawn to the immediacy and expressive exploration of the medium. Each piece is a personal response to the beauty I see in native Australian flora and landscapes, especially the wildflowers that flourish in our environment. I am endlessly inspired by the interplay of light and colour, and I strive to create works that invite viewers to pause, zoom in, reflect, and connect with the natural world. My creative journey has evolved alongside my life experiences. Art has always been a grounding force for me—a way to express gratitude, wonder, and joy.
