Cliff and Scribbly Gum
Charcoal on paper
Cliffs and Scribbly Gum was created from memory after several walks around the Shipstern Circuit in Lamington National Park. It is a diverse landscape with expansive views into the valleys below. The beauty of creating work from memory and imagination, especially in charcoal, is that all you have to focus on is line and tone. Work like this begins in my studio, with simple outlines of trees and ridgelines. As I'm working, I'll picture the landscape I have walked through in my mind and gradually add elements, that are not always initially over defined. The goal is to focus on the atmosphere and energy of the native forest. It is a flow state of working and is always a joy to watch the shapes and patterns begin to form a drawing that reflects the beauty and diversity of the surrounding landscape.
