Fly Like an Eagle

Acrylic

For over 30 years, I’ve been fortunate to call the Whitsundays home, continually inspired by its beauty—both above and below the surface. Fly Like an Eagle was created in response to breathtaking drone imagery captured by marine biologist @johnny_gaskell, whose work offers a unique aerial perspective of marine life. One image in particular—fifteen Eagle Rays gliding beneath the surface—resonated deeply with me. Traditionally associated with the skies, eagles are powerful symbols of freedom and grace. Here, the Eagle Rays appear to “fly” through the ocean depths, captured in motion from above, layered in depth and formation. This striking contrast between expectation and reality perfectly encapsulates the theme. With Johnny’s permission, I reinterpreted this moment to celebrate the quiet majesty of life below the surface, and the powerful parallels between sky and sea.
