Harvest Time (Condong Sugar Mill)

Oil on Canvas

The Condong Sugar Mill has been a cornerstone of the Tweed Valley landscape since 1880. As someone who calls this region home, its presence has become a familiar and meaningful part of my everyday surroundings. I was inspired to capture this scene while driving along Clothiers Creek Road, returning from a beach walk with my dogs. The cane fields had just been cleared for harvest, and recent rain had left reflective puddles that, together with the backdrop of the Caldera and the Sugar Mill, caught my eye and imagination. This was a view I felt compelled to paint.
Tackling the detail of the ploughed fields and the cane was no small task, especially since this is my first oil painting in many years. At times, I wondered why I had chosen such a technically challenging subject to revisit the medium. But in the end, I believe I’ve captured the essence.

About Leesa Livermore

With a background in graphic design and illustration, I've honed my skills in various industries, with art always being a constant passion. Recently, I've transitioned to working primarily with acrylics and oils. Mentored by Andy Remainis, a respected artist in the Murwillumbah region, I've been influenced to capture the vibrant landscapes and structures of the Northern Rivers. My work celebrates the everyday beauty of the Tweed Valley, drawing inspiration from local flora and architecture. Through my art, I aim to convey a sense of connection to place, inviting viewers to see the world from an impressionistic/realistic perspective.
