About Mel Hayton
In the 2016 NSWAG exhibition, Nude - Art from the Tate Collection 25% of artists were female.
To honour these women artists, Mel selected artworks of women by women from the Tate Collection as inspiration for paintings.
Mel was inspired by Cecily Brown to create a series of semi abstract/expressionist paintings. Brown’s depiction of women challenges traditional themes in Western painting of the passive female nude presented for the male gaze.
Mel approaches her work with raw energy, typified by dramatic random and refined mark making, striking line work and bold colours.
