It’s Raining Again!
Ink, acrylic, heated soldering on timber board
Living in rural New South Wales, my work is shaped by the changing rhythms of the land—its quiet beauty, its volatility, and its resilience. Over the past few years, I’ve witnessed intense and unpredictable rain, flooding, and the subtle dislocation of seasonal patterns. These shifts, both unsettling and strangely mesmerizing, speak to the deeper narrative of climate change that now weaves through daily life.
Mist drifting through trees, the weight of saturated earth, and the hush of persistent rain are recurring motifs in my art. They offer a kind of emotional weather—reflective, uncertain, yet grounded in place. I’m drawn to capturing these fleeting atmospheres, not just as natural phenomena, but as emotional landscapes.

About Penelope Oates
Nestled deep in the Australian bush of rural NSW, Penelope draws inspiration from the landscape just beyond her studio windows- a protected parcel of native bushland and a winding creek.
Oates works wit ha soldering iron on timber board, a technique she has developed and refined over many years. Her distinctive mark-making blurs the boundary between drawing and painting, etching a myriad of lines into the painted surface with heat and intention.
She holds a BA in Fine Arts from the NSW Collage of Fine Arts and a BA in Dramatic Art in Design from NIDA.
