Michelle Feng
Junyi-Afterlight

Oil on Canvas

This work explores the emotional residue that remains after an encounter, a memory, or a period of intensity has passed. The figure is held in a moment of inwardness, illuminated yet withdrawn, as though suspended between presence and recollection. I was interested in the face as a site where thought, memory and feeling can remain partially visible without ever becoming fully legible.

Light functions not only descriptively, but psychologically — as something that reveals and unsettles at the same time. The dark ground and restrained palette allow the expression and turn of the head to carry the weight of the work.

Rather than describing a specific narrative, the painting considers what lingers: the traces of experience that continue to shape us after the visible event has ended. It is a portrait of quiet aftermath, where intimacy and distance coexist.

Size: 40.5 × 50.5 cm

About Michelle Feng

Michelle Feng is a Sydney-based figurative artist whose oil paintings explore memory, identity, and the unseen emotional forces that shape human experience. Working between observation and invention, she creates psychologically charged portraits and narrative compositions that balance realism with atmosphere and ambiguity. Her practice is driven by an interest in presence, silence, and the tension between what is visible and what is felt. She has been a finalist in prizes including the Callinan Chambers Art Prize, Dean Cogle Portrait Prize and Hornsby Remagine Art Prize.
