Ruth Bosveld
Lake Oberon

Gouache

Lake Oberon is found in the Tasmanian south-west wilderness, high in the West Arthur range. Alpine lakes such as this nestle below a jagged skyline, here made up of the ridges of Mt Pegasus, Mt Capricorn and Tilted Chasm. The walk through this area is particularly challenging and not one that I have been fortunate enough to undertake, though I have flown over the area on two occasions.

The reference for this painting was kindly supplied by Timothy Bunge. I sketched the scene in pencil on a recycled piano key and then applied layers of gouache with a fine-pointed brush. This went on until I had the all the details I required. The process requires the use of magnification. The same rules apply as with a larger piece, including good composition and a strong tonal contrast, drawing the viewer into the scene.

Size: 22 × 21 cm

About Ruth Bosveld

I love Tasmania, the land, animals, plants, and people. My paintings depict life here in all its facets, particularly agricultural themes, weddings, and events. I paint miniatures, en plein air, and larger pieces.

I work mainly in oils and gouache, the latter particularly for my miniatures. I hope my work gives joy as I seek to express something of the beauty of God's world around me. I am always learning and strive to do the best I can.
