Making the Invisible Visible
Oil pastel on canvas
This piece is about shining a light on what you cannot see in a hope to make the invisible, visible. The sunflower is the international sign for invisible disability and is used to help raise awareness and visibility for those that live with and manage an invisible disability. My hope is that this piece will help those like me who manage an invisible disability feel seen and work towards changing a person’s reaction of disbelief and dismissal to one of curiosity and compassion.

About Melissa Hammond
Melissa Hammond is a multidisciplinary artist based in Canberra. Her intuitive-led practice encompasses oil pastels, photography, mixed media and advocacy work. In early 2025, Melissa completed ‘Winter at the Louvre’ with the Studio Escalier Art School in Paris, France and in late 2024, she attended the Chateau d’Orquevaux Art Residency. In 2024, Melissa was one of 25 artists in Australia to receive the MATCH Lab grant through Creative Australia. She has also been a semi-finalist for the international Head On Landscape Awards, a finalist in the Fisher’s Ghost Art Award and participated in group exhibitions in London, France and Australia.
