Miles to Go
Gouache
"Miles to Go" is a painting based on a photograph kindly supplied by Jodi Hoare. She is pictured riding her horse along Tatlows Beach, east of "The Nut" at Stanley in northern Tasmania. This view is a well-known one, featuring heavily in the tourist literature of the region. Walking up The Nut requires quite an effort, which can be avoided by taking the chairlift. The views at the top make either process feel well worthwhile as the coast can be seen in both easterly and westerly directions.
The long expanse of beach reminded me of the poem by Robert Frost, titled, "Stopping by woods on a snowy evening". One of the lines is "and miles to go before I sleep". In this case, it feels the expanse is restful and refreshing. I painted the scene in gouache on a recycled piano key with a fine-pointed brush under magnification.
Size: 23 × 17 cm

About Ruth Bosveld
I love Tasmania, the land, animals, plants, and people. My paintings depict life here in all its facets, particularly agricultural themes, weddings, and events. I paint miniatures, en plein air, and larger pieces.
I work mainly in oils and gouache, the latter particularly for my miniatures. I hope my work gives joy as I seek to express something of the beauty of God's world around me. I am always learning and strive to do the best I can.
