I grew up in the country, which people like to romanticise, especially in landscape paintings. But to me, city rooftops shimmer with opportunities that don’t exist back home. Our real lives are very urban, and I think honest paintings reflect–and maybe even celebrate–that. ‘Monument’ delights in the way the urban and natural worlds entwine in our cities and our lives.

About Samantha Groenestyn
Raised in far north Queensland, Groenestyn trained as a philosopher and painter in Brisbane and Vienna. She’s a finalist in the Archibald Salon des Refuses (2025+2024), and is Highly Commended in the current Clayton Utz Award. Her sun-drenched work is observational but tightly constructed, anchored in vital, rhythmic drawing.
