Oil on linen on board

I use oil paints. I like to thin the paint out at the start, whilst under-painting and I generally use burnt sienna. I aim to get down gestural marks and rough anatomy firstly and go from there.
I push and pull my paintings. I will make a mark and if I am not happy I will wipe it off and make another one, until I believe I am conveying what I feel, see and want to express.
One of my thought processes that I try to adhere to whilst painting and drawing is "Do I need that mark?" Or "Do I need to make this mark I am contemplating right now?" My aim is to say things gesturally, simply or understated in paint yet enough to evoke the essence of the sitter.
For me, painting is about connecting and noticing.

About Ruth Rawle

Ruth is interested in ‘drawing in paint’. This is important for her life drawing practice as she feels this approach helps her to stay loose in portraiture and her landscapes.
Ruth grew up in western New South Wales where her initial love of the Australian landscape and the people in it come from. Ruth studied at the National Art School in Sydney graduating in 1999. Ruth currently resides on the Southern Gold Coast in the bush with her husband and bees painting around life with sporty kids. Ruth also works two days a week at the Tweed Valley Hospital nursing.
