Robert Todonai
Rhinoceros – Curtain Call

Oil on canvas

As a human audience gazes on, applauding, at the passing of these magnificent creatures, the rhinoceros faces extinction. The juxtaposition of celebratory reverence alongside the tragic decline of such an extraordinary species highlights a profound contradiction in our relationship with nature. Society’s tendency to commodify and aestheticise nature adds to the obscenity of this reality - how can we can marvel at the beauty and majesty of these animals while simultaneously being the cause to their demise? This painting challenges the audience’s perception, urging them to move beyond passive admiration and confront the uncomfortable truths about conservation and ecological responsibility.

Size: 90 × 75 cm
