John Braben
Stuck in the Mud at Weinam Creek

Oil

This is one of a series of paintings based on my observations in and around Weinam Creek, Redland Bay. I was drawn to the strong verticals of the old mooring posts and the sweeping curves of the boats sitting in the mud at low tide. I have simplified the forms and enhanced the colour and tonal contrasts to create a dynamic, almost abstract image while still retaining a sense of place.

Size: 94 × 64 cm

About John Braben

John Braben is originally from UK where he graduated from Wallasey College of Art after completing 4 years full-time study. After a brief stint teaching basic drawing and painting John moved into the commercial world to work as a graphic designer/visualiser.

John and his family moved to Brisbane in 1973 where has enjoyed a successful career as a designer, illustrator and design director in book publishing, design and advertising. He paints mostly local landscapes and cityscapes. His technique is painterly and the painting process multi-layered, intuitive and fluid with a strong accent on colour and tone, light and shade.
