‘The Long Way Home’

Mixed Media

The Long Way Home is inspired by a long, winding dirt road leading to our rural property near Lue, NSW. I travelled this back road many times during the early, often overwhelming stages of motherhood. Driving slowly and silently, the rhythmic passage over the uneven surface gently rocked my babies to sleep and soothed my frazzled nervous system. Framed by trees that cast wandering shadows and filter soft tendrils of light, the road draws the eye forward, suggesting both movement and stillness. It becomes a space of quiet transition — between waking and sleep, urgency and calm — shaped by repetition, ritual and familiarity. The work reflects on the passing of time within these small, deeply intimate moments, where landscape and memory become intertwined. Through close observation of place, it considers the emotional weight carried within everyday journeys, and how ordinary environments come to hold lasting personal significance.

About Lisa Kennedy

Lisa Kennedy is a regional NSW artist whose practice is grounded in close observation of the rural landscape surrounding her. Informed by daily experience of weather, land and seasonal change, she creates atmospheric works that capture fleeting impressions of the natural world, balancing recognisable form with intuitive mark making. Her work centres on drawing and mixed media, using her non-dominant hand to loosen control and preserve immediacy and movement within the image. Layering ink, watercolour and pen over textured surfaces, her practice explores the tension between stillness and motion, and our emotional connection to place.
