The Miner
Oil on Canvas
As a portrait painter, I love to achieve likeness and reflect on a person’s mood and personality. Equally important is a focus on skin tone and the incorporation of light and shade. With The Miner, I sought to capture how this worker might feel, as he emerges from the coal mine, with furrowed brows and eyes struggling to adapt to the light again. His skin is creased from a lifetime of hard labour. His eyes reflect a sadness, a weariness in the knowledge that his future will remain unchanged - each day, a relentless return to the mine.

About Barbara Conn
Soon after beginning my painting journey, I realized that portraiture was to be my passion. I love to achieve likeness and reflect on a person’s mood and personality. Equally important is a focus on skin tone and the incorporation of light and shade. Using oil gives a texture that, for me, is lacking in other genres.
In 2023, I won First Prize at the Bell Art Show; a Highly Commended for another; and the Viewers’ Choice Award.
People’s Choice winner in 2022 at the Immanuel Arts Festival, Sunshine Coast.
Twice semi-finalist in the prestigious Doug Moran National Portrait Prize.
