The Wishing Tree, Lamington National Park

Watercolour and Gouache

A majestic strangler fig tree, the ‘Wishing Tree’, is found along the scenic rainforest Wishing Tree Track in the Lamington National Park, which is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area.
It is a notable landmark that, according to local folklore and the stories recalled by members of the local O’Reilly Family, the visitor should run around the enormous outer roots seven times and then trust the forest to fulfill your wish.
I have chosen to represent this magnificent fig using watercolour washes and gouache, trying to capture the amazing structure of the tree and the light filtering through the tree canopy which has been reflected on the lushness of the layered plant life found in this precious ancient rainforest.

Size: 65.5 × 85.5 cm
