Maraika Taylor Clairfayt
Wanagarren Ash

Charcoal

Coming from a drawing background and dabbling in expressive abstract paintings for the past 20 years, I turned back to my love of drawing and starting experimenting with charcoal around 6 years ago. I am drawn to the atmospheric magic that tonal work provides. This piece is referenced from a photograph I took in WA last year after a fire had ripped through the Wanagarren National Park. The starkness of the mountains of ash and sticks was something that I had never seen before in a landscape, and I believe is striking. Truly this piece is a charcoal of charcoal.

Size: 95 × 85 cm
