Ode to all those Shitty School Lunches
Acrylic on Canvas
Not unlike complexities of the human condition, my work is multifaceted and layered, derived from a deeply personal, yet therapeutic process of painting childhood memories. This work particularly relates to the struggle of growing up a ‘creative’ in a family of scholars and intellectuals.
Just as memory can subconsciously blur the line between reality and make believe, so too does my subject matter with its whimsical narrative alluding to the hidden story through symbolic reference… Her unyielding posture representing the rigidity of one-size-fits-all institutional learning, the desolate school grounds a symbol of loneliness, and the delicately balanced apple a reminder of that time I tried to subtly bribe my maths teacher for a pass.
Rich layers of colour painted atop a hand-forged textural background create roadmaps conveying emotion, whilst the reference to animals pays homage to the immense comfort experienced from my childhood relationship with anthropomorphism.
Size: 122 × 91 cm

About Nicoletta Revis
2022 Finalist National Emerging Art Prize, Australia
Nicoletta resides and paints in a 100-year-old church overlooking the Clarence River in Lawrence, NSW.
Predominately self-taught, she undertook beginner classes in 2019 learning basic skills before choosing a more insular, hands-on, experimental approach to learning through her solo art practice… Through this practice she experiences surges of creative ‘break-throughs’ with existential learning each time she paints.
In December 2021 she haphazardly stumbled across her unique style when she began painting stories of her life with ‘adventures of the girl and dog’… Animals in her work are representational of her relationship with anthropomorphism.
