Painting on location allows me to engage directly with the land—its shifting light, changing weather, and ambient sounds. This immersive process becomes a somatic experience; the body responds to wind, birdsong, heat, and silence, guiding the brush as much as the eye. This path connecting the ocean to the hills holds memory. I pause to consider the deep history beneath my feet—the stories, ceremonies, and stewardship of the Bundjalung people who lived in harmony with this land for millennia. Their presence, though often unseen, is always felt. My work is a dialogue between place, perception, and presence—an attempt to honour the land’s spirit and evoke its layered past through mark, movement, and colour.

We currently ship to Australian locations only. We cannot deliver to PO Boxes.

About Matthew Sansom
Matthew Sansom is an Australian artist based in Byron Bay, NSW. Often working en plein air, responding to nature form and light with expressive brushwork and sensitive use of colour. After training in Art and Design at Geelong TAFE, he worked as a stage and costume designer for theatre and dance in Melbourne's vibrant arts scene. In 2000, he moved to the UK, where he painted plein air and experimental studio works. In 2004, he relocated to the Northern Rivers of NSW, where he became immersed in landscape painting.
