Home Tree
Oil on linen
‘Home Tree’ is a celebration of my local eucalyptus tree. While the eucalyptus is undoubtedly a quintessential figure in the Australian landscape with its airy canopies and soaring white trunks, it was only when I paused for a closer look at mine that I observed an unsuspecting beauty. The familiar became transformed into something almost dreamlike. That’s the service I want my art to provide.
I painted slowly and intentionally, each brushstroke seeking to reveal the hidden colours in the trunk and their relationship with the soft winter light. Using dappled brushwork and texture, I present subtle variations in colour to show how the whole scene, much like in nature, interacts to create something equally unique and unified.
The ‘home’ reference in the title refers to my own lifelong connection to this tree but also to the precious native wildlife that rely on the species for survival.
