Bathroom I Celebrating Suzanne Valadon
Oil & acrylic on canvas
BATHROOM I
Celebrating Suzanne Valadon (1865 – 1938), an amazing French artist.
She grew up in Montmartre, Paris, supporting herself from the age of ten with odd jobs. From 1880 - 1893, Valadon modelled for some of the most important painters of her day, including Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec. She learned from painters around her. Close friend / mentor Edgar Degas taught her drawing and etching. Valadon soon transitioned from an artist’s model into a successful artist.
In 1909 she started painting full time. Two years later, she attracted critical acclaim with her first solo exhibition. She rose to the peak of her fame in the 1920s, and had four major retrospective exhibitions during her life. Through her paintings, Valadon transformed the genre of the female nude by providing an insightful expression of women’s experiences.
Size: 62 × 62 cm
