Byrrill Creek
Watercolour on paper.
I really try to convey a sense of depth and atmosphere in my work, and there are many ways a landscape painter can achieve this. For instance, when painting in colour, distant objects should be cooler the farther away they are, something we all see regularly when we look out at blue tinted mountains, for example. When working monochromatically though, colour temperature is not applicable so you have to go lighter in tone, use very low contrast and soften distant edges to get that sense of distance.
The thing I really love about monochromatic painting is the feeling of time passed, an archival, historical mood like old, faded black and white photographs.
Size: 60 × 90 cm
