Cadence
Charcoal
Cadence captures the quiet rhythm of motion across water, inspired by a moment observed during Airlie Beach Race Week 2025. Rendered in charcoal on watercolour paper, the work embraces a limited palette to focus on contrast, repetition, and flow. The sails rise and fall along the horizon like measured beats, each vessel contributing to a larger, collective movement.
The texture of charcoal mirrors the shifting surface of the sea - soft, layered, and atmospheric - while the tonal range evokes both distance and immediacy. Light and shadow guide the eye across the composition, echoing the natural cadence of wind, water, and sail.
Grounded in observation yet abstracted through mark-making, Cadence invites the viewer to feel the rhythm of the scene - steady, immersive, and quietly powerful.
Size: 120 × 50 cm
