Lamatha
Acrylic on Belgian linen
"Lamatha is towards the north side of Mornington Island close to Birri. It is a freshwater swamp and very popular with people. During the wet season, people would go out to gather wild berries and water lilies. In winter, when the strong winds blow across Mornington Island, people usually go to camp during the school holidays and catch swamp turtles and fish for small fresh water fish. The Peters and Williams family were very kind to other Aboriginal people who were removed off the mainland and allowed them to camp and hunt during the missionary days. Today we continue to ask permission from the Peters and Williams families before going to this part of Mornington, it's following cultural laws and showing respect."
Size: 92 × 61 cm
