Sean Crookes
Looking For This – Spring

oil on linen

My friend is a volunteer for a youth organisation in regional Queensland, he goes by the name Emu. This painting (and others in the series) is an imagined landscape informed by my knowledge and experiences of time spent in Australia’s national parks, state forests and outback places. As an artist I am interested in how painting can investigate ideas of relationships: interpersonal, intergenerational, familial, and relationships shared with our lived spaces, the land, and environments. I like to encode symbolism and metaphor into my paintings, often with multiple themes and interpretations that may reveal themselves to the beholder. The Australian yellow everlasting flower Xerochrysum bracteatum, a robust perennial, features strongly in my recent works. This flower holds a great deal of personal significance.

About Sean Crookes

Sean Crookes is a contemporary visual artist whose work poignantly captures the essence of familial bonds and domestic life. A recipient of the Bonnie English Memorial Award for academic excellence in art theory, his seminal solo exhibition “Generations” at QCA Galleries was a deep dive into three years of intimate family interactions, reflecting on collective experiences of home and kinship. Crookes continues to explore the delicate nuances of daily existence. His current projects extend the narrative outdoors, examining the evolving dynamics of life beyond family, with a sensitive, yet incisive lens, inviting audiences to ponder on their own life narratives.
