Sophie Malkin
Rocky Shallows

Oil

In "Rocky Shallows" I was deeply interested in the intricate play of light as it illuminates a small wave rushing through rocky shallows at a beach. The gleaming, textured surface of the water contrasts sharply with the shadowed, silhouetted rocks. More waves loom in the background, suggesting the constant motion and changing moods of the ocean. This piece is a celebration of natural light, its ephemeral qualities, and its power to transform the mundane into the magical. I was particularly drawn to the challenge of rendering this interplay of light and water, aiming to evoke both the tranquillity and the dynamic spirit of the ocean.

Size: 91 × 45.5 cm

About Sophie Malkin

I became a full-time professional artist in 2021, after leaving my town planning career to follow my passion, and have not looked back since!
Oil paint is my chosen medium. I love the boldness of the paint, the vividness of the colour, and the way the paint can be manipulated on the canvas to achieve any technique. My preferred style is impressionism-realism, and I often seek to create a mood or atmosphere in my work through the use of colour.
