The Literacy of the Body: Moonlight Sonata

oil on panel

This is the first painting in a series called The Literacy of The Body.
It’s about celebrating older women;
The experiences lived by our bodies,
In our bodies.
It’s about the resilient spirit of our bodies;
It’s about celebrating a changing body.
It’s about laying down the self-destructive criticism, and sweeping away the criticism we’ve taken on by society and others about our bodies.
It’s about acceptance - genuine self acceptance.
And acknowledging our strength, courage and resilience.

A layering technique was used here: many, many layers of oil paint to replicate the complexity of skin. The laying on of paint is rapid- akin to a fluttering- to capture my energy through brushwork , but the layering process is lengthy.
The whole is a meditative dance.

Size: 40 × 50 cm

About Alyssa Aleksanian

My work explores the link between the nearby (the landscape in microcosm) and the figure.
Our bodies hold vast intelligence, that, bypassing the bias of the mind, can link us to a harmony the land has always known.
It’s between the Land and the Body, that deeper truths are revealed.
I seek to express this subtle link; this vision is akin to chasing a damselfly in shifting sunlight.

My education encompasses traditional atelier to contemporary training.
I am a qualified conservator of paintings.
After 20 years as a schoolteacher, I now devote my time to painting.

Finalist, Blake Prize, 2024.
