Still Life

Gabi Mika-McNaughton
Thelma, Dolly and I

Acrylic on cotton

This work is part of a body of work where I have been on a journey of discovery, exploring heirlooms and objects that, for whatever reason, my family thought worthy of protecting and passing on to future generations.
These objects and Heirlooms have enabled me to bear witness to the footsteps of some of those who came before me and have opened windows into a past I knew little about. Whether it be through a mid-century German vase, like in this case, or a crocheted shawl made from wool harvested on the family's farm.
In this work. The mid-century West German vase belonged to my grandmother, Thelma. The crochet by my grandmother's Aunty Dolly (crocheted over 80 years ago). The green and red fabric is mine that I have been carting around for 30s…because I love it!

Size: 51 × 66 cm
