Plenty is an artwork that captures celebration, gratitude and curiosity within the everyday.
If you have plenty of tomatoes, you are going to have a whole lot of something to eat, so you will be able to share it with family and friends, surrounded by plenty of laughter and plenty of love.
Even as individuals the saturated warm colours and eccentric shapes of these heritage tomatoes express abundance, like they are bursting with flavour and warmth. I like that there is no standard perfect heritage tomato. Each unique tomato is just as it should be. There is a tactile pleasure in holding them and a gourmand’s pleasure in anticipating their flavour. Searching through them to find the ones that we like best to take home is a happy moment of treasure hunting in our suburban days.

Claire Lai has almost always lived in Southeast Queensland. The diverse environments of inner city, rainforest, rural and coastal have been a source of finding detail and wonder in the natural and suggestions of narrative and identity within the urban. Close observation has been a preoccupation and pleasure throughout her life. As you explore something simple you find more complexity within it. Claire uses techniques of modernism and realism to explore these ideas in oils and soft pastels.
